Terms of use & submission

By using this site or submitting a domain, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not submit a domain. Questions and editorial requests may be sent through ourprivate request form.

1. The museum

404 Not Found is an editorial collection that documents and comments on publicly accessible error-page design. The service may change, pause, or end at any time. We do not promise that any page, submission, screenshot, description, link, or feature will remain available.

2. Submissions are editorial tips

A submission consists of a public domain. By submitting, you ask our automated tools to make ordinary public web requests to that domain's /robots.txt and /404paths, inspect the response status, and create desktop and phone screenshots for a private moderation queue. The capture proceeds only when robots.txt permits our identified crawler. You confirm that the domain is intentionally public and that you are not supplying credentials, private access, personal information, or instructions to bypass a technical restriction.

A submission is a tip for possible coverage. It is not a claim that you own the domain or its content, and it does not transfer another person's rights. If you own material you submit, you grant us a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, reproduce, crop, resize, annotate, and display that material as reasonably needed for editorial review, publication in the museum, promotion of the museum, and archival operation.

3. Human review; no automatic publication

Nothing is published automatically. A human curator may accept, reject, delay, recapture, edit, fact-check, categorize, feature, unfeature, or remove a submission in our editorial discretion. We may correct titles and descriptions, add commentary, label a soft 404, or decline a submission without explanation. Submission does not create a right to publication, credit, compensation, a backlink, or continued inclusion.

4. Prohibited use

You may not use the site or submission system to:

• target a private network, IP address, nonpublic system, or access-controlled resource;
• submit malware, unlawful material, deceptive redirects, or a domain intended to harm the capture service;
• impersonate another person, falsely claim ownership, or submit personal information;
• harass a person or business, manipulate rankings, flood the queue, or evade rate limits;
• interfere with the site, probe its security, scrape the private moderation system, or automate abusive requests.

We may block requests, preserve evidence of abuse, and cooperate with lawful process.

5. Editorial screenshots, copyright, and trademarks

Screenshots are used to identify, document, criticize, and comment on web-design artifacts. We aim to use only the resolution and context reasonably useful for that editorial purpose, link to the source, add original metadata or commentary, and avoid offering a substitute for the original site. Copyright and trademarks remain with their owners. Inclusion does not imply endorsement, affiliation, permission, or sponsorship.

Fair use is a case-specific legal analysis, not an automatic label. We consider the factors in 17 U.S.C. § 107, including purpose, nature, amount, and market effect. See theEditorial & takedown policy for corrections and removal requests.

6. External sites and advertising

The museum links to sites we do not control. Visiting them is at your own risk and subject to their terms. Paid placements are labeled, and paid links use the appropriate sponsored link relationship. Advertising does not give a sponsor control over editorial decisions, and placement near an exhibit does not imply endorsement by the featured site. We do not sell access to or licenses for third-party screenshots.

Advertising acceptance and removal

An inquiry, rate listing, draft, or payment request does not require us to accept or continue an advertisement. A placement begins only after our written acceptance and any required payment. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we may reject, pause, replace, reposition, or remove an advertisement at any time for any lawful reason, including suspected illegality, inaccuracy, infringement, malware, deception, technical defects, brand-safety concerns, conflicts of interest, nonpayment, breach of these Terms, or poor fit with the museum.

When we permanently remove a prepaid ad without an advertiser breach, the advertiser's exclusive ordinary remedy is a pro-rata refund for the unused prepaid placement period. We may deny a refund when removal results from the advertiser's breach, unlawful or misleading material, infringement, security risk, or failure to pay, to the extent permitted by law.

Advertiser responsibilities

An advertiser represents that it has authority to purchase the placement and all rights and permissions needed for its copy, marks, images, claims, products, and landing pages; that its material is accurate, substantiated, lawful, noninfringing, and free of malicious code; and that it will comply with advertising, privacy, consumer-protection, and industry rules that apply to its campaign. The advertiser must promptly correct material that becomes inaccurate or unlawful.

We do not guarantee placement availability, uninterrupted delivery, a minimum number of impressions or clicks, conversions, search ranking, business results, or exclusivity except as expressly stated in a written order. Advertisers remain responsible for their landing pages, offers, fulfillment, customer relationships, and legal compliance. The advertiser will defend and indemnify us from third-party claims and reasonable costs arising from its ad, promoted offering, landing page, breach of these representations, or violation of law, except to the extent caused by our independent editorial conduct or misconduct.

7. Disclaimers

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the site is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of accuracy, availability, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, noninfringement, or uninterrupted operation. HTTP results and external pages can change after capture. Commentary reflects editorial opinion at the time of publication.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Internet Crafters and its operators will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, lost profits, lost data, or business interruption arising from this site. Our total liability for any claim relating to the site will not exceed the greater of US $100 or the amount you paid us for the service giving rise to the claim during the preceding twelve months. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so those exclusions apply only to the extent permitted.

9. Indemnity

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend and indemnify Internet Crafters and its operators from claims, losses, and reasonable costs arising from your unlawful use of the service, your violation of these Terms, or material you submit while claiming it as your own. This does not make you responsible for our independent editorial choices.

10. Governing law and venue

These Terms are governed by Arizona law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be brought exclusively in a state court located in Pima County, Arizona, or, when federal jurisdiction exists, the United States District Court for the District of Arizona. You consent to personal jurisdiction in those courts.

11. Changes and severability

We may update these Terms prospectively by posting a new effective date. The version accepted when a domain is submitted governs that submission unless a change is required by law. If a provision is unenforceable, it will be limited to the minimum extent necessary and the rest will remain effective. These Terms, the Privacy Policy, and any posted submission notice form the agreement concerning this service.
